Practical guidance on web design, SEO, and EMR for healthcare providers in Nigeria
The map results sitting above the ordinary search listings capture a large share of local healthcare searches. Appearing there depends on a different set of factors from ranking a web page.
A single page listing everything you offer competes for nothing in particular. Splitting it into one page per service is usually the largest single improvement available to a healthcare website.
For most Nigerian practices the Google listing is seen by more patients than the website. It is also usually half-finished, and the empty fields are the ones that decide whether you appear in local results.
The words patients type are rarely the words practices publish. Understanding the gap between clinical vocabulary and search vocabulary is most of what healthcare SEO consists of.
Accessibility work is usually framed as a compliance exercise. In a healthcare setting it is simply usability for the people most likely to need you, and the basics take very little effort.
A hospital group with several branches has a structural decision to make early, and getting it wrong means patients call the wrong site, arrive at the wrong building, and search engines cannot tell the branches apart.
More patients look up when you are open than read any other page you publish. It is also the detail most likely to be wrong, and being wrong about it costs you visits you never hear about.
Moving premises breaks more than your signage. Your address is scattered across your website, your Google listing, directories and old posts, and patients will keep arriving at the old building until every copy is corrected.
Every extra field on an appointment form is another chance for someone to abandon it. Most clinic booking forms ask for information the practice does not need until the patient arrives.
The device your patients use is not the device your website was designed on. Most healthcare sites in Nigeria are built on fast laptops and tested on fast connections, then delivered to people on neither.
Doctor profiles are usually written as marketing copy and read as noise. Written as a professional record, the same page becomes the thing that earns referrals and reassures patients.
Labs are usually chosen by a referring clinician or by an anxious patient holding a request form. Both want the same small set of facts, and a lab site that answers them well beats a larger one that does not.
