A practice checks its SEO by searching its own name. It appears first. The conclusion is that things are working.

This is the most common self-assessment in healthcare marketing and it measures nothing useful. Your practice name is a term almost nobody else is competing for. You would rank first for it with no optimisation at all.

More importantly, everyone performing that search already knows you exist. They heard your name from a friend, saw your signage, or were referred. Search did not find you a patient; it merely confirmed an address for someone already on the way.

The searches that actually grow a practice

New patients arrive through searches that do not contain your name:

  • A service and a place. "Dental clinic Yaba."
  • A symptom or a worry. "Persistent cough in a toddler."
  • A comparison. "Difference between an ultrasound and a CT scan."
  • A practical question. "Do I need to fast before a lipid profile."

These are the searches where you are genuinely competing, and they are the ones worth measuring.

How to check honestly

Open Search Console and look at the queries that brought people to your site. Separate them into two groups: those containing your practice name or a clinician's name, and everything else. The second group is your actual reach.

For most practices that have never done deliberate SEO, the second group is small. That is not a failure, it is a baseline, and it is the only number worth watching over time.

Do not neglect the branded searches entirely

Branded search still deserves attention, just not celebration. Someone searching your name should immediately find correct hours, a correct address, current reviews, and a working route to book. If a stale directory listing or an old social profile ranks above your own site, that is a real problem worth fixing.

It is also worth knowing whether competitors are appearing in ads against your name, which happens more than practices realise.

What a realistic target looks like

Growth here is slow and it compounds. A practice that publishes genuinely useful service pages, keeps its listing current, and accumulates honest reviews will see non-branded arrivals rise gradually over months rather than weeks.

Anyone promising rapid movement on competitive non-branded terms is either buying ads, which is a different thing and should be described as such, or is not being straight with you.

The honest measure is simple: are more people arriving who did not already know your name. Everything else is decoration.
